How do I purchase a custom web address for my nonprofit?

We really recommend Hover.com. You can use other businesses like GoDaddy, which is really common, but we prefer Hover. The instructions for purchasing a website (or domain name in tech speak), are different for every company, so we’re going to show you how to do it on Hover. Here goes:



  1. Go to www.hover.com

  2. Type in a web address that you’d like to purchase. We recommend that you choose a “.org” web address from the drop down menu because you’re a nonprofit, but that’s not necessary. When you’re done, click Search

  3. If Hover says that your web address is available, congrats! You can now proceed to purchase your web address.

  4. If Hover says that your web address is taken, you can choose from one of their suggestions, or do another search.

  5. Once you’ve found the right web address, you can choose whether you want Hover to create email addresses (like johnsmith@yournonprofit.org) or if you do not want that service choose, NONE. You can always create these type email accounts at a later time or with another service like Google. Once you’ve made your choice, click the + button.

  6. Now that you’ve clicked the + button, click Checkout

  7. Choose the number of years you would like to pay for your web address. You can always renew later. Once you’ve chosen, click Checkout.

  8. If you don’t already have an account, fill out your basic info and click Create Account.

  9. Now you will need to fill out some additional info for your web address. If you don’t mind the world knowing that you own your web address, then don’t click the check box at the bottom. If you want to stay more private, click the checkbox. Once you’re done, click Continue.

  10. Now you will need to fill out your credit card billing info. Once you’re done, click Continue.

  11. Agree to the terms of service by checking the box and then click, Finish.

  12. Congrats – your nonprofit now has its own custom web address!
